The Five Minute Interview with Sam Davis-Allonce

How do you define futurism in your work?

Futurism in food is understanding the history of ingredients and recipes and learning the significance of them.

How are you recording your personal history for future generations?

Photographs and recipe writing is how I am recording my personal history. Recently becoming a new mother has helped me to recognize the significance of this. I want my son to understand his parents' heritage and extended family not only through my words but also through the food we eat and pictures of our day-to-day lives.

What does the future of your industry look like?

My industry's future is in telling authentic stories from cooks and chefs from cultures that span the world, not just the ones that we think of when discussing ethnic flavors. Appropriation is no longer accepted, so this will hopefully make way for chefs from various backgrounds to tell their stories truly.

What did you learn about failure as a child? What what you tell your younger self about failure now?

I was taught to view failures as a lesson, but I also look at failures as just failures as an adult. Sometimes, there is no lesson. Sometimes it was just not for you or meant for you, and that is okay.

If you were asked to teach a class, what you title it?
