In praise of the book, Osayi Endolyn says, “This book illustrates what the wisest among us have known all along: The seat of power in food—its soul and expertise—has always begun at home, at the hands of skilled women in their kitchens.”

In Bibi’s Kitchen is the new book from acclaimed chef Hawa Hassan with food writer Julia Turshen, featuring 75+ recipes from 8 East African nations that illuminate the rich culinary history from the countries along the Indian Ocean—the backbone of the spice trade. Hawa interviews bibis, or grandmothers, such as Ma Shara from Zanzibar, who shares her famous Ajemi Bread with Carrots and Green Pepper; Ma Vicki, who brings Tanzanian flavors such as Stewed Plantains with Beans and Beef to her suburban New York home; and Ma Gehennet from Eritrea who offers classic takes on Eritrean Flatbread and Ground Chickpea Stew. Other recipes include Chicken Biryani, Quick Stewed Eggplant with Coconut, Date Bread, and Sweet and Sour Braised Lamb with Tamarind.
